SOCIAL CAPITAL EXCHANGE
SPECULATIVE DESIGN RESEARCH
The Economy of Social Capital Exchange
Social capital is the immaterial amount of power that someone has, evaluated by associations and the status of said individual. How does our relationship with social capital evolve when it is presented as a fiscal currency instead of an invisible arbiter of our value? By creating a counterfactual object that dispenses receipts of social capital exchange, I call on people to explore their own relationships with social capital. In bringing tactility to the immaterial, I draw attention to the consequences of their relationships and intentions, questioning how social capital exchange relates to the benevolent or overt racism, sexism, and homophobia in daily interactions. My project aims to make people more aware of their influence and the invisible consequences of their interactions.
TL:DR Social capital is how much social power you have. I speculate on how we exchange and trade this power through our relationships and interactions. I've created a design object that helps to bridge the gap into this alternate world.
